CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Matilda slices the orange in half on the wooden cutting board. The kettle screams out loudly. The coffee pot is filled up and stirred around. A dark and steamy brew is poured into the two mugs. Jacqueline takes a sip as Matilda pushes down on the small juicer with an orange half and rotates her hand quickly from side to side.

Jacqueline stands next to the table over the top of the bar fridge in the plush hotel room. Her large sandy colored ears stick upright, alert to the sounds coming from the orange being freshly juiced. She steps away to the window revealing her large padded and muscular legs a thick very long tail and a bulging pouch across her stomach. The sun rises through the yellow and white snow clouds up over the waking City skyline outside.

Matilda finishes juicing and pours out the orange into two glasses as the toaster pops up it’s smokey hot bread slices. She wanders over to the window next to Jacqueline with her coffee mug held in a fury black hand. She sips. Her all in one suit is dashed with white on a black background. Her tail is short and stumpy, her ears are small but sharp. They stare at the busy distant City scene, through one good eye each.

“So. You are a Tasmanian Devil then. Do you get to have a pouch too, like I have, down here?” Matilda pulls out a packet of chocolate biscuits from a small opening on her stomach. She smiles brightly at Jacqueline holding them up.

“Yep. Got the pouch. Got the goods. Now, it’s time for you to learn a little trick which will change your life, forever.” She unpacks all the biscuits and bites the ends off one, then uses it as a straw to suck up the coffee from her mug.

“And then, when all the biscuit inside has gone, like dunking, but different, then in it goes, just the thick chocolate shell is left. Oh yes baby!. Now that, is what I’m talking about!. Get that into you!” She pops the remainder into her mouth and savors the instant joy. Jacqueline lifts up the biscuit and follows the demonstration. In bliss they both drift through two more biscuits each. A phone buzzes on the table next to the window. Jacqueline slowly answers.

“Hi Leon. Yes we are OK. No. I got no message. But we are fine, just a few little nicks here and there, but all is good. Yes she is with me now. That sounds very interesting. OK then, we will meet you at the office in say two hours, bye then.”

“Leon I guess (Jacqueline nods as she dunk straws another biscuit). Has he got something for us?”

“He said the DNA under the finger nails of the guy in the toilet, well it’s from a fish of some kind. But he thinks he knows what the murder weapon could be and a possible idea on a location too.”

“Wow!. Maybe he picked up some good info from his snitch.
